I’ve been in Argentina for over a month now. The whole situation still feels pretty surreal. I’ve been going to school for several weeks and have already taken a test, but on the subject of school in general I’d like to write in detail another time.
Today we will talk about the Intertribus, a school activity that took place two weeks ago.
What is the Intertribus?
The Intertribus is a school event that takes place once a year. As far as I know, there is not an Intertribus at all schools, and it has only been held at my school for the last three years. For the Intertribus, the whole school, including teachers and directors, is divided into two teams. There is the Tribus Rojo (the red team) and the Tribus Verde (the green team).
The Intertribus at our school
At our school the Intertribus takes place on two days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the nearby sports centre. During these two days there are competitions in football, basketball, volleyball, a variation of dodgeball and dancing. There are also quizzes and games in between.
At our school, the spirit of the Intertribus was already recognizable on my first school days: the school is divided into two halves in the weeks before the Intertribus, and these are decorated in the colors of the respective tribus.
In sports class, we mainly made decorations, and as exchange students, we were often asked about our affiliation (I was Verde). The last days before the Intertribus, even the school uniform was softened a little, we were allowed to come to school dressed in the colours of the Tribus. In addition the first task was done some time before the competition began: bottles were collected to draw attention to a recycling project.
During the two Intertribus days, almost everyone wore at least one piece of clothing in their own colour. In addition, many girls had glitter on their faces and wore coloured bandanas. They started with the dance performance, both teams had created a choreography. Also on Monday were the dodgeball and volleyball games. On Tuesday were the basketball and soccer games. In the end, the red team won the Intertribus, but they only had one more victory.
All in all, the Intertribus was a really exciting experience, I was especially impressed by the team spirit. But only sports for two days for seven hours each day can be a bit boring from time to time.
